There's just something about the famous concrete jungle that makes you feel special. As you look up towards what seems to be never ending sky scrapers, you can't help but feel incredibly small yet incredibly powerful. You're here, you've already accomplished a little something.
I'm a big city girl, definitely.
When I first moved from France to the US, I had already lived in Montreal, Canada for a year and then relocated to Los Angeles, where I lived for 7 years.
But I got burned out on the city of Angels and was seeking meaning and something different. So I moved to Tallahassee, FL for 1 year to pursue my Master's degree and try something new.
I wanted to try to live in a smaller Southern city and experience the homeliness and warmth of the South. While there were many things I enjoyed about living there, I couldn't help feeling that it wasn't who I was and who I could be. I'm a big city kind of girl.
Don't get me wrong, there are many perks of living in a smaller city like the little traffic, genuine nice people, cost of living, housing and affordability in general. I still can't believe that I paid $850 per month for a 4 bedroom townhouse!!!!
In NY, $850 would not even get you a utility room. I don't even want to know what a town home would cost here! But a big city also means opportunities, choices, and selection. It feels like possibilities are endless on every level: shopping, dining, jobs, traveling, commuting, hobbies etc...
And the fashion!!! So much possibility. You don't have to be afraid of who you want to be, whether you're stuck in the 80s, goth, rocker, into Harajuku, casual, business like etc... It doesn't matter, the city is full of unique characters and nothing seems to be too odd or out of the norms here.
Did I mention I saw Minnie and Mickey holding hands and walking into a bar?? Yep. Both in character costumes to entertain tourists and an actual couple I n their time off, true to the cartoons we all love. Oh why, didn't I take a picture?????

In the end, on my first day here I couldn't help but hum:
"Start spreadin' the news, I'm leavin' today, I want to be a part of it
New York, New York
[...]
If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York..New York"
Zei
How about you? Are you a big city or small city kind of person. Why?
